Tales From the Dark Side

The best gift I ever gave was to my grandson, Josh, when he was ten years old. He was camping with us in the Uintah's. Coming back from a hike, we discovered a dead coyote near the dirt road that led to our camp site. The thing had been there for a while. A LONG while. Somehow I got the idea that I needed to extract a tooth to make Josh a necklace. The other family members had gone on ahead so I was going to have to do the removal by myself. Fine. I don't have the "germ" fetish that my daughters do. I put my foot on what was left of the head, bent down and started pulling. The little boy watching his grandma was pretty impressed. Go pioneer woman! Trace drilled a small hole in the tooth and Josh wore his necklace........well, until he lost it. He was ten, and good at it.

When my childhood friend, Joanne, heard of our adventure, she too wanted a tooth, so we loaded up her 4-wheelers and headed back to the scene of the crime with our husbands. Much time had passed but we were able to find the carcass again and her dentist husband did the removal with much greater style than I had. Now everywhere we go we search for good road kill. Afterall, I have 6 more grandsons!! Please call me day or night if you find some worthy remains!

What a funny Grandma you are. I would hate to have to compete with you...except I do know what it's like sometimes. I think my own husband compares me to you when the odds are not in my favor.

that is the best story! imagine, a woman who used to be afraid to put her face in the water pulling a tooth out of a dead coyote! will wonders never cease?

"ROAD KILL?" So many ways to use it. I remember a recipe book on the subject. "No!" we didn't really eat it, but we did find other uses back in the day. And now I hear about jewelry making.....

I want it understood that I am not a germ phobe like the others. They need meds for it. I think your next post should be about the road kill you'd leave on doorsteps back in Rupert.
