Planning Ahead

Clarkston, Utah is in the most charming valley, nestled in the foothills north of Logan. It is the end of the trail. It is not "on the way" to anywhere. My heartstrings are tied to this place to a degree that I cannot possibly describe. My father was born here, and is buried here. Dad's parents, most of their siblings and all 4 of his grandparents are buried in the Clarkston Cemetery as well. This cemetery is famous as the resting spot of Martin Harris, one of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon. The Martin Harris Pageant is held yearly in August. I have my cemetery plot purchased here and find comfort with having that decision already made.

I have been trying to start a "movement" for several years with the idea of wrapping garland around the base of the headstone. This way the flowers aren't removed by the caretakers to mow around. I buy 2 garlands and take my wire cutters and some wire with me. I attach the garland tightly around the bottom and secure with the wire. I change the garlands out seasonally, ending with evergreen garland and pine cones for Christmas.

love the garland idea! And yes, it does look peaceful! Just don't plan on using your plot soon!

I would move to Clarkston if I could. Should you buy me a home plot there?

I just returned last night from that area. Started at Bear Lake, then to Logan by way of Logan Canyon and on to Ogden and SLC. Indeed, it was beautiful. So green at this time of the year. Next time I am thru we will have to meet up.

Also, I loved the garland idea. At the Cousins reunion we were discussing the 3/$10 potted plants that we purchase at the grocery store for our loved ones on Memorial Day. We talked about days gone by when we would all gather as families and take beautiful bouquets of Iris and Lilacs up to the cemetary. Since most of don't have those kinds of items in our yards any more, I think the garland may be the perfect answer. Thanks for yet another idea I can use in my life.

This could mean we're related by marriage - lol My hubs has relatives buried in Clarkston haha. I love Cache Valley - if we could move anywhere I think that is where we would go.

funny- every time we drive to clarkston, i ask "why do people live here?" that's not very loyal to my ancestors, but i just couldn't live in the country. to each his own however!

Amazed: No plans on using soon, but I do road bike, so you never know...
Jamie: I have extra plots. I've always wanted to be neighbors!
Joyce: We WILL get together soon. I'm sure you had a wonderful cousin reunion, as usual:)
Not mum: Give me a last name girl!!
Lee: Remember when T and I tried to move there in 1979? I still would, but that's just me. Kid, country life is dabomb:)

Oh that we still lived the simple life where no one moved. Imagine 3 or 4 generations staying in the same town. Now those were serious roots. Wouldn't it be fun to live that life(with indoor plumbing of course)again. You know, when flowers that were brought to a funeral were those plucked from your own garden. Your garland is beautiful. They'd be lovely dried wreaths within hours in Arizona.

That is a terrific idea! I haven't been to my Dad's site since 2002 (we're overseas), I hope my brain can hold onto this idea for when we get back there.

Sid, the garlands are plastic, on sale at Joanne's or Michael's for 50% off. Fresh would never do!
